Welcome to Jonathanmpaquette.com - Best Intellectual History Blog 2018

Greetings to all interested readers. This is a blog written by Jonathan Paquette, visiting faculty in European Intellectual History at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. It contains the CV of the author along with his monthly blog posts discussing aspects of his research and interests. Each blog post discusses a subject in depth and contextualises it within its larger historiography. It is written in order to appeal to both academic and popular audiences.

Jonathan Paquette’s work discusses the field of European Intellectual History from 1700 to the present. Currently, he is completing a monograph on the history of Scottish unionist discourse from 1885-1965. However, Jonathan is also completing two additional monographs on the Jacobite and nonjuring intellectual Charles Leslie 1650-1722. Leslie was the most capable of Jacobite polemicists and the last major defender of Divine Right kingship in the English-speaking world. There have been several academic articles on him and one Canadian dissertation from 1983. However, his importance within British intellectual history necessitates a monograph in order to fully analyse his importance. Leslie regularly debate with John Locke in both his newspaper The Rehearsal and in his numerous pamphlets and theological treatises. He deserves greater academic awareness of his importance within Jacobitism and larger British public discourse in the late Seventeenth and early Eighteenth centuries.

Additionally, Jonathan Paquette is also writing a monograph on the aristocratic and prelatic Ultra-Tory movement of the 1820’s and early 1830s. This movement sought to preserve the Anglican Church’s preeminence in an age of multi-confessionalism and the rise of middle class political power. He fully agrees with J.C.D. Clark’s thesis of a British ancien regime beginning in 1660 and lasting until the Great Reform Act of 1832. This work is completed in honour of his accomplishments in renewing studies of aristocratic and ecclesiastical authority in the British Isles. Besides these efforts, Jonathan has edited a published translation of Ludwig Klages’s cosmogonic writings and regularly write review essays for the prestigious journal History of European Ideas. He has also published a book chapter studying the aristocratic politics of the Eighth Duke of Northumberland. Also, Jonathan has submitted three journal articles on the Augustan Tory polemicist John Shebbeare, the patriarchalist political theory of Charles Leslie and Tory opposition to the 1753 Jewish Naturalisation Bill. In 2017, Jonathan Paquette will be obtaining an Upper Level Intermediate Certificate in German from the Goethe Institute. All of his work is within his field and constitutes important advances in terms of scholarship
